Violence at work is defined by the HSE as "any incident in which a person is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work".  Physical assaults and verbal abuse are the fastest growing health and safety concern in the workplace with verbal abuse often being the precursor to violence.  In the year 2004/2005 there were approximately 650,000 incidents of violence at work in then UK*.  The risk is greatest for the ever increasing number of people that work alone.

In addition, your lone workers may face risks from their environment or specific tasks they have to carry out. Working at height, with machinery, chemicals, electricity or where other slip, trip or fall hazards exist all contribute to their risk profile.

The introduction of the Corporate Manslaughter Act in April 2008 has helped sharpen the minds of all those responsible for managing lone working teams and is ensuring that professional and credibly run organisations are seeking to mitigate risks for workers and introduce credible technology solutions to assist them.

SoloProtect has been established to enable employers to address their duty of care, in an environment where increasing regulation, litigation, insurance costs and pressure from employee bodies reflects the growing risks to lone workers in the workplace.

The risks relevant to a number of lone working sectors are outlined in the following pages, together with the benefits that SoloProtect will deliver and key resources that will help in putting together a business case for the implementation of a lone worker protection solution.
